No doubt everyone has now received and read this latest newsletter

Hopefully the support database will be updated to include this feature, although there is one item at the moment!

Equally, I can see there being loads of queries from existing customers, "access denied"

Are there any other hosts that have such a feature, where you need to unlock your account for limited FTP access

I was considering using my IP address, but Virgin Media typically change this every 2 to 8 weeks
With the small number of website updates I do, it just means unlocking before every use

Yeah I can forsee this being a bit of a hassle for myself too.

But wait...isnt the password used to login to eXtend, the same as the FTP password for the main account? So if the FTP password was comprimised, they could still just login to eXtend using it and unlock FTP (or mess about while they are there) - provided they could be bothered to do the work involved ?

You can set separate passwords for extend and FTP, as well as webmail
I recommend to all my customers
Equally, if a customer has not logged in for 6 months HI change the passwords without notice, but they only reset the main one (ie extend and FTP)

Not seen it done anywhere else but, makes sense that if most of the time ftp isn't being used it may as well be locked.

Not sure that is going to keep hackers out as most hacks are done via injection not through ftp access but can't see it causing any major issues.

I'm all for it if it stops Heart changing account passwords without telling anyone! I've had this done on a few accounts that are regularly FTP'd to.

As to the clients, I'm doing two mailshots about it, one in the coming week and one just before it goes live. That way they won't have any excuses for not knowing!

FTP lock now appears in the Control Panel, currently set to UNLOCKED, so you can advise your customers accordingly

How exactly do you have seperate paswords for eXtend and main FTP ? Webmail I know of.

Under the 'Change Your Password' panel it states:
This page allows you to change your password for this control panel, FTP, FrontPage and SSH

The Control Panel is the "main password"
For a separate password for FTP, this is done in the account control panel, this then gives you three passwords for the account

I've lost a few customers to this already, mostly people who use automated scripts to sync with FTP and use dynamic IP addresses.

They're not happy with this feature *at all*.

As quite rightly pointed out, from the eXtend address my customers use, the control panel isn't even SSL anyway, so the whole thing is a bit of a joke.

Why not implement SFTP instead?

Very few control panels are SSL
The only benefit is encrypting the details for login, after that there is very little benefit

The fact the FTP password is embedded in the page, thus sent unencrypted isn't one of them? Not to mention that the login password = ftp password.

Anyway, it still mitigates the point. SFTP would solve this issue more effectively and not annoy the pants off my customers.

I seem to be lost on this one, where is the account control panel? Are you talking eXtend or Reseller Control Centre here?

It's the control panel for the individual account - the Client Control Panel.

Same thing, the control panels run on Heart's own brand, called eXtend.

Again, sorry.............Im seriously lost on this one.
As far as I'm aware there is:

1) login details for the 'customer control panel' on my site
2) FTP + eXtend (same) password which can be changed after logging into eXtend
3) webmail password which can be accessed after logging into eXtend

Can someone point out where the option to have sepereate eXtend and FTP password is for me please?

Hopefully you've just got a new email from Heart Internet about the new feature they are enabling on 15th March, which enables you to set a different password on ftp and extend.

I'm guessing that therefore this was not been fully possible to do previously.

It should be fully possible very soon now....
