Playstation 3 News PlayStation 3 update targets hardware hacks
Posted by maximus on Tuesday, September 07 @ 14:54:13 BST (4 reads)

Sony has closed a loophole that allowed users to run software that enables pirated games to be played on the PS3 console. The update blocks the PSJailbreak and PSGroove applications. Mathieu Hervais, one of the developers behind PSGroove, told BBC News that it was "safer not to update" if users wished to continue using the hacks.

Sony won a court order in early September banning the distribution of the PSJailbreak dongle.

The update is the latest step in Sony's ongoing battle against the commercial dongle - PS Jailbreak - that allows users to play pirated software. It also targets open source code, known as PSGroove, which allows homemade games to be played on the console.

While the PSGroove software was not originally intended to allow the playing of pirated games, as PSJailbreak does, it has already been modified by other hackers to permit the practice.

Playstation 3 News PlayStation Move and sub-controller revealed
Posted by maximus on Thursday, March 11 @ 10:21:45 GMT (321 reads)

Sony has finally revealed that its new motion controller for PS3 is to be called PlayStation Move, and that it will have an additional nunchuk style add-on, similar to Nintendo's Wii.

Sony's motion controlled wand-style controller finally got its official name at this week's GDC conference.
PlayStation Move is set to be made available in three different bundles: standalone for those who already have the PS Eye; with the camera and a PS3; or with the camera and a game – which will cost under $100.

Lag-free and wireless

Latency (or lag) for the Move is nearly non-existent at one frame, a similar response you get from the DualShock 3 controller.

Sony demoed a one-on-one battle game called Gladiator Duel, and a table tennis game.

The wireless nunchuk style add-on is to be called the 'Sub-controller', and was demoed with Sony's Socom 4.

The Sub-controller features an analogue stick, so gamers can play more complex games like first-person shooters with PlayStation Move.

PlayStation Home now has more than 10 million users, Sony has revealed.

It announced the figure alongside three new Home spaces themed on Uncharted 2, Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time and MotorStorm. According to Sony, a Home game space should now be a paramount part of the marketing strategy for any new game.

"PlayStation Home is fast becoming the meeting place of choice between users and developers," said Dan Hill, European Home business manager at SCEE.

"Every new game space enhances the overall experience for consumers, offering more variety, more choice and more enjoyment from a PlayStation Home session. The more game spaces there are, the better it gets, and the number of spaces keeps on growing.

Playstation 3 News PS3 will remain most expensive console on the market
Posted by maximus on Monday, February 02 @ 12:29:30 GMT (466 reads)

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's David Reeves has said that he believes the PlayStation 3 will always demand the highest price in the home console market.

Reeves admitted that there is a possibility for a price cut on the luxury console – but no plans are in place due to the current economic downturn.

"I think it will, yes," said Reeves, when asked whether he would agree the PS3 will remain the most expensive console.

"I'm not saying there are going to be any price cuts at all in the short term or the medium term. I'm not saying we don't need to do it - we are expensive. It is possible that as the cost [of manufacturing] comes down, we will be able to do it.

Playstation 3 News DFC: PS3 will surpass the Xbox 360 in 2009
Posted by maximus on Wednesday, June 04 @ 10:05:03 BST (433 reads)

In its May 2008 Dossier, DFC Intelligence is forecasting that the current generation of game consoles will exceed the installed base for the prior generation of consoles in 2011.

The company revised its earlier forecast of an installed base of 180 million current generation consoles by 2012 based on strong 2007 sales and is not concerned with the possible effects of a slowing economy.

"Ironically, a slowing economy can actually help the game industry. Videogames provide a high rate of entertainment return and high gas prices actually encourage people to stay at home and play games," the report said.

Overall, the Wii will lead the current generation as it "has enormous momentum and appeals to the broadest audience." DFC also thinks that in 2008 the Wii could set the record for the most consoles sold in a single year due to continued demand.

Even so, DFC's analysts note that most of the biggest software titles of the current generation - Halo 3, GTA IV, Gears of War, Metal Gear Solid 4 - aren't available on the Wii. Thus, for many third-party publishers, the more important race is between the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3.

Playstation 3 News Sony to see 10% boost in PS3 sales
Posted by maximus on Tuesday, February 19 @ 16:23:14 GMT (353 reads)

Analysts agree that HD DVD demise is good news for the console

Sales of the PlayStation 3 could see a rise of up to 10 per cent in the wake of Toshiba's pull-out from the next generation DVD war as a result of educated consumers who have been waiting for the format war to end.

That's according to Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter, who also said that as well as the short term boost, the long term effect will be even more positive.

"Longer term, I think it's a huge boon for Sony, as most retail clerks will be instructed to push Blu-ray along with sales of HD monitors at holiday, so we should see a large increase in PS3 sales year-over-year at holiday," he said.

Playstation 3 News PlayStation 3 sales hit 10.5 million
Posted by maximus on Tuesday, February 19 @ 16:01:07 GMT (356 reads)

Console effect gave Blu-ray a massive lead over HD DVD

Sales of Sony's PlayStation 3 console have surpassed 10.5 million globally, completely dwarfing the estimated HD DVD installed base of 1 million - and that's without taking into account standalone Blu-ray players.

As the fallout of Toshiba's decision to cancel further production of its HD DVD format continues the extent of the disparity between the relative proliferation of the next generation DVD formats is becoming clear.

But while there is likely to be frustration for those consumers that already opted for HD DVD, a clear format winner will be positive overall according to one analyst quoted on Yahoo! News.
