General News Motorola Abandons Google for Bing on Android Phones
Posted by maximus on Friday, March 12 @ 14:23:02 GMT (289 reads)

A new partnership with Microsoft will see Motorola's Android phones in China preloaded with Bing services, possibly in an attempt to gain distance from Google's heated censorship battles there.

Rumors of Apple running into Microsoft’s arms and adopting Bing on the iPhone have yet to come to fruition, but it appears that it wasn’t the only company mulling over the idea. On Thursday, Motorola announced that it would switch from Google to Bing as the default provider for search and maps on – perversely enough – Google-powered Android phones.

A partnership between Microsoft and Motorola will see the launch of Motorola phones with Bing already bookmarked in the Android browser, and add a preinstalled Bing widget. Initially, the deal will only apply to phones sold in China, where the company will roll out the changes immediately in new phones and retroactively through over-the-air updates in older models. Motorola hasn’t explicitly drawn out whether or not the alliance might eventually expand to other countries.

General News Movie Studios Pissed Off At Netflix
Posted by maximus on Thursday, December 31 @ 12:30:31 GMT (434 reads)

Honestly, at what point do entertainment execs finally figure out that by purposely not making content available in the format people want it in, they're only encouraging them to get that content through unauthorized means? We already knew that the big movie studios were annoyed with Netflix and trying to get Netflix to delay movie rentals until at least a month after the DVD comes out. Now we have an explanation why.

General News Bank charges D-Day revealed
Posted by maximus on Wednesday, November 18 @ 19:03:34 GMT (482 reads)

The Supreme Court will reveal the result in the latest stage of the bank charges legal saga on Wednesday week, it announced today.

If the banks lose, it could reopen the reclaiming bandwagon (see the Bank Charges reclaiming guide for template letters).

The court is considering an appeal by current account providers against earlier rulings that charges can be assessed for fairness, with the result due at 9.45 am on Wednesday, 25 November.

The Court of Appeal and High Court have already ruled that charges can be assessed for fairness.

If the Supreme Court upholds that view, the Office of Fair Trading will determine whether charges of £35 a time for exceeding your overdraft limit are fair. It has hinted it thinks they are unjust.

General News Sony Ericsson Android arrival date
Posted by maximus on Tuesday, November 17 @ 08:50:15 GMT (446 reads)

Sony Ericsson has created an advance order page for its first Android smartphone and it reveals that the phone will launch in the UK on 10 February 2010.

SE had until now only been willing to say that the X10 – codenamed ‘Rachael’ – would be available during “the first half of 2010”.

The page’s “I’m interested in this phone on...” field also hints that an untethered version of the phone will be released, because “Handset Only (Sim Free)” is one of the drop-down options.

General News Free Google sat-nav shakes market
Posted by maximus on Thursday, October 29 @ 14:41:08 GMT (289 reads)

Shares in sat-nav device companies have fallen substantially after Google unveiled its free live sat-nav for mobiles on Wednesday.

US firm Garmin fell 18% after details of Google Maps Navigation were revealed. Dutch firm TomTom dropped 13% on when markets opened on Thursday.

The Google application promises free real-time, turn-by-turn directions for people to follow on their phones.

The Motorola Droid will be the first mobile phone equipped with the system.

Google Maps Navigation, revealed on Wednesday, combines services including a search engine to find addresses, Google Street View for photos of locations, and live traffic data.

Other mobile sat-nav applications, such as TomTom's, can cost up to £60 to add.

TomTom's share decline wipes out all of its gains since August. Separately the company warned of lower prices in the coming months.

UK phone users must wait for smartphones using the first version of Android to update to the 2.0 version.

HTC have confirmed they are working on this for their popular Hero handset. T-Mobile smartphones also use Android.

General News Just a note about forum membership
Posted by maximus on Thursday, August 27 @ 20:05:22 BST (322 reads)

For those new to the site you will notice that in order to post on the forum you first need to register. We operate an admin approval system in order to keep spammers out of the forum but in so doing it does slow down the approval process for genuine users. Normally if you register during the day (UK time) you will be approved within 1-2hrs sometimes almost immediately depending on if the admin is on line at the time.

I hope you will all understand that these days, having an open membership to any forum can very soon lead to it being swamped with spam and result in a poorer experience for genuine users. I wish we did not have to implement such an approval system but that's the world we live in. Please do take time to register and I will try and make the approval process as quick as possible.

General News Apple boss Steve Jobs to return to work after 'liver transplant'
Posted by maximus on Sunday, June 21 @ 12:26:40 BST (376 reads)

Welcome back, Jobsy.

The media saga has served up more medical drama than an episode of ER, but we're happy to report that Apple CEO Steve Jobs is on the mend and on target return to work later this month.

A story in the Wall St Journal claims that Jobs underwent a liver transplant at a Tennessee clinic two months ago and is recovering well, but will return initially on a part-time basis from the end of June.

The subject of the Chief Exec's health has caused almost as much rumour and speculation than the Apple products he has traditionally announced to whoops and hollers at MacWorld and WWDC expos.

Mr Jobs underwent surgery for Pancreatic Cancer in 2004, and was sidelined from action again earlier this year due to a 'hormone imbalance' which was causing worrying weight loss. It now appears that the problem was much more serious.

The gossip emerged following a hastily-removed post from a moderator on Vodafone Ireland's message board explaining why the network will not be carrying the Nokia N97 on the Emerald Isle.

General News Activision:
Posted by maximus on Sunday, June 21 @ 11:50:56 BST (355 reads)

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick has said that his company may have to stop supporting the PlayStation 3 if Sony does not drop the price of the luxury console.

"They have to cut the price, because if they don't, the attach rates [the number of games each console owner buys] are likely to slow. If we are being realistic, we might have to stop supporting Sony," said Kotick to The Times.

"When we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console — and the PSP [portable] too."

According to the report, Activision paid USD 500 million in royalties to Sony last year which, "probably still worked out at 400 per cent of the profit they made".

He added: "I'm getting concerned about Sony; the PlayStation 3 is losing a bit of momentum and they don't make it easy for me to support the platform.

General News Customer finds ecstasy pills in pre-owned GTAIV box
Posted by maximus on Sunday, April 12 @ 19:07:32 BST (421 reads)

A consumer has discovered pills, believed to be ecstasy tablets, inside the box of a pre-owned copy of Grand Theft Auto IV.

Richard Thornhill bought the title from a Gamestation store in Gloucestershire and found the pills inside the box - wrapped in cling film - which he delivered to a nearby police station.

He was offered an apology by the store, but expressed his fear over concerns that his 12 year-old son or 16 year-old daughter could have been harmed.

"When I opened the box up, the cling film wrap fell out. I could not believe it," he told the Telegraph. "I have two children and my son plays Xbox all the time. He could easily have opened the box and found them.

"I dread to think what the consequences would have been if he had. He is only 12. He could have died.

General News 15 Zavvi stores shut
Posted by maximus on Thursday, January 29 @ 18:01:27 GMT (389 reads)

Ernst & Young, administrator of troubled retailer Zavvi, has announced that it is planning to close a further 15 branches.

The closures represent the redundancy of a further 295 employees, however the company will continue to trade with the remaining 48 stores.

"We continue to trade with 48 stores in the UK, however in doing so we have to manage the cost base of the company with a view to maximising returns to creditors," commented Tom Jack, Joint Administrator.

"This includes a constant re-evaluation of our property portfolio in line with trading performance. Consequently, with reducing stock levels we have had to manage our cost base accordingly and close a further 15 stores."

General News Publishers call for UK government to adopt PEGI
Posted by maximus on Saturday, September 06 @ 22:26:32 BST (333 reads)

Publishers have responded to calls from UK's culture minister, Margaret Hodge, for the games industry to work with the government in finding the best solution to videogames age ratings.

Speaking to In Stock Magazine, Hodge commented that the games industry has to understand the principles behind the suggestions made in the Byron Report concerning age ratings. She called for the games industry to offer viable alternatives to age ratings that solve the issues raised in the report. In response, a number of publishers have called for the minister to adopt the PEGI ratings system.

"The PEGI age ratings system is favoured by Nintendo. It has the ability to assess and rate all game content and does not rely on a sample of gameplay to form its decisions," said David Yarnton, UK general manager of Nintendo. "The fact that there is also an EC proposal for member states to adopt PEGI only adds further weight to the solid arguments and facts for its UK adoption as the sole system of choice for games ratings."

General News Airlines Go Bust
Posted by maximus on Thursday, September 04 @ 08:32:17 BST (421 reads)

Story courtesy of www.moneysavingexpert.com

Airlines collapsing. Zoom, Alitalia and more to come? Transatlantic budget airline Zoom’s gone insolvent and cancelled all flights; package holiday firm XL is in refinancing talks and even Italian flag carrier Alitalia is relying on the State to save it. Huge fuel costs mean airlines are struggling, and industry predictions say many less profitable players are at risk.

How to protect yourself. Don’t let this put you off booking cheap flights; often it's the more strongly financed companies that stay cheap, as they can afford to compete. Yet protect yourself. 1. Book on a credit card. If the cost’s over £100, Section 75 laws mean the card company’s jointly liable, so if the airline goes bust, it must pay the money back. Though always repay in full, so you’re not charged interest. 2. Consider package holidays. Book a package (flight and hotel wrapped in one) and check it has ATOL protection, then if the company goes bust, you should get a refund, and if you’re already out there, you can carry on your holiday and get a flight home (see Cheap Package Holidays).
