Apple News New Apple iMac 21.5-inch (Core i3) - PCMag Editors Choice!
Posted by maximus on Friday, July 30 @ 10:14:54 BST (45 reads)

The Apple iMac 21.5-inch (Core i3) ($1,199 list) is the latest version of the entry-level iMac all-in-one desktop. It swaps out its previous iteration's Intel Core 2 Duo CPU and Nvidia integrated graphics for a newer dual-core Intel Core i3 processor and ATI discrete graphics. Apple upgraded the iMac's internal components, but left the exterior untouched—going with the philosophy "don't try to fix what ain't broken." The $1,199 iMac is the system that can convert your friend/relative/significant other into one of the Mac faithful, and it (still) makes a great base station for an iPod, iPhone, or iPad. It has a great design, stellar performance, and a reasonable price. For all these reasons and more, the Apple iMac 21.5-inch regains the Editors' Choice for mid-priced all-in-one desktops.

With a new aluminum unibody chassis and a host of new components, the Apple Mac mini ($699 list) is the best little Mac on the market—maybe even the best mini PC. Improvements include better 3D graphics, a new SD card slot, greater energy efficiency, and an HDMI port that HTPC (home theater PC) fans have been clamoring for. The Mac mini is finally the mainstream, compact PC you've been searching for. It defines its category, and as such, it earns our highest recommendations and our Editors' Choice.

Apple News Intego discovers Mac spyware piggybacking on free screensavers
Posted by maximus on Friday, June 04 @ 11:09:04 BST (154 reads)

Ever heard of PremierOpinion? You soon will: but this doesn't quite look like the long-expected attack of malware on Macs. Instead it's a comScore subsidiary that's the culprit.

If you have downloaded and installed one of a long list (see the end of this post) of screensavers for the Mac, you've also got some spyware on board.

Yup. Spyware. On the Mac. The sector is becoming big enough to be worth the attention of the writers of scummy software. You might think it's not malware, but that's only because you haven't read the (long) list of things it does.

Intego, which has ploughed a fairly lonely furrow offering anti-virus checking for Macs (though it also picks up malware aimed at Windows machines, which Macs can pass on via email or Office documents), says it has found the spyware program - which it calls OpinionSpy, aka PremierOpinion - distributed within a number of free applications and screen savers on a variety of sites.

Apple News Apple plugs critical security holes
Posted by maximus on Thursday, January 21 @ 08:22:02 GMT (432 reads)

Apple’s first Mac OS X security update for 2010 is out, providing cover for at least 12 serious vulnerabilities.

The update, rated critical, plugs security holes that could lead to code execution vulnerabilities if a Mac user is tricked into opening audio files or surfing to a rigged Web site.

With Security Update 2010-001, Apple also fixes flaws in the Adobe Flash Player plug-in that ships with the operating system.

Here’s what has been patched:

* CoreAudio (CVE-2010-0036) — A buffer overflow exists in the handling of mp4 audio files. Playing a maliciously crafted mp4 audio file may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution.

Apple News Psystar shut down by Apple....or are they?
Posted by maximus on Sunday, December 20 @ 15:22:59 GMT (469 reads)

After Apple's sweeping permanent injunction, Psystar has officially ceased operations. The company's CEO Rudy Pedraza told the Dow Jones Newswire last night that he is "shutting things down immediately." The company has also released its eight employees, and shuttered its website last night.

The actions came after Apple's permanent injunction against Psystar earlier this week, which gave Psystar until December 31st to stop selling its Mac clones. The clones violated Apple's End User License Agreement for Mac OS X, which expressly forbids use of the operating system on non-Apple hardware.

This also marks the end of Psystar's Rebel EFI software, which had been Psystar's only viable product since early December. Many Psystar watchers doubted if Psystar would continue to sell it.

Apple News Mac OS X mega patch covers 58 security vulnerabilities
Posted by maximus on Tuesday, November 10 @ 19:57:21 GMT (379 reads)

Apple has dropped another mega-patch to cover a total of 58 documented vulnerabilities affecting the Mac OS X ecosystem.

The majority of the flaws could allow a remote attacker to gain complete control of an unpatched system, meaning that this update carries an “extremely critical rating.”

It includes patches for open-source components like Apache and PHP and security holes in the QuickTime media player.

* AFP Client — Multiple memory corruption issues exist in AFP Client. Connecting to a malicious AFP Server may cause an unexpected system termination or arbitrary code execution with system privileges.

Apple News Apple's move to kill Hackintosher suit denied
Posted by maximus on Monday, October 12 @ 10:49:32 BST (297 reads)

Apple's motion to toss out a lawsuit filed by pesky Hackintosher Psystar
Make that one exasperated US District Court judge.

Apple's motion was straightforward. It asked the judge who will hear Apple's suit against Psystar in January of 2010 - William Alsup of the US District Court in Northern California - to throw out a Psystar countersuit filed in August in the Hackintosher's home state of Florida.

Psystar's suit alleges that since Apple is "tying its operating system to Apple-branded hardware," Cupertino is unfairly monopolizing the market for what Psystar dubs "premium computers," and by doing so "collects monopoly rents."

Apple News Apple to set Snow Leopard OS free
Posted by maximus on Thursday, August 27 @ 18:09:40 BST (408 reads)

The latest update of the Apple Mac operating system OS X, known as Snow Leopard, goes on sale on Friday.

The software - available only as a DVD, not a download - was originally due to hit shops in September but Apple brought it forward at the last minute.

Both OS X Snow Leopard and the soon to be released Windows 7 from Microsoft will also compete with a system from Google, called Chrome OS, set for release in the second half of 2010.

Whilst both Google and Microsoft will offer entirely new operating systems, Snow Leopard is a refinement to its predecessor Leopard.
