Games News 1C seeks Russian government investment
Posted by maximus on Saturday, May 08 @ 11:50:00 BST (207 reads)

Russian publisher 1C Company has requested that the Russian Communication Ministry help to fund the majority of a new game project, to the tune of 500 million roubles (£11m/$16.5m).

According to a Russian newspaper report translated by website RIA Novosti the project is intended to increase patriotism amongst young people and promote the Russian perspective of World War II.

The Communication Ministry highlighted its interest in creating low cost educational and professional simulators for pilots, as well as promoting Russia information technology exports.

1C has suggested a project consisting of six flight simulators, one of which has allegedly already been demonstrated to president Dmitry Medvedev.

Russian presidential aide Arkady Dvorkovich categorised the games as "interesting" but failed to back the proposal, indicating that he was unsure whether it needed government support.

Games News Intel Debuts Six-Core Core i7 Chip for Gamers
Posted by maximus on Friday, March 12 @ 14:17:54 GMT (314 reads)

Intel has officially rolled out its Core i7-980X Extreme Edition, sporting 6 cores and the company's latest 32nm architecture.

At this week’s Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Chipmaker Intel officially took the wraps off a new chip intentionally designed to make gamers drool. The Intel Core i7-980X Extreme Edition sports Intel’s latest 32nm manufacturing technology, 6 processing cores, and a full dozen computing threads. In theory, the new chip should offer up to 50 percent better performance than the Core i7 processors that preceded it…not if only software can catch up to leverage those capabilities.

As with existing Intel Core i-series processors, the Core i7-980X Extreme Edition features HyperThreading that can effectively double the number of threads a single processor core can handle, meaning the six-core system can handle up to 12 threads executing at once. The new chip also sports AES-NI for enhanced security and support for up to 12 MB of shared L3 processor cache. The 32nm technology also means the processor doesn’t consume mammoth amounts of power…in fact, in some instances it uses less power than the four-core Core i7-975 Extreme Edition that preceded it.

Games News OpenGL 4 Looks to Take on DirectX 11
Posted by maximus on Friday, March 12 @ 14:01:05 GMT (283 reads)

The Khronos Group has unveiled the OpenGL 4 spec, which takes on DirectX 11 with hardware-accelerated tessellation and improved performance.

High-end gaming has been fixated on DirectX 11 technology lately, but that doesn’t mean OpenGL is out of the picture: the Khronos Group has just announced the OpenGL 4.0 specification, the first major update to the open graphics standard since the launch of OpenCL in late 2008. OpenGL 4 builds on the work of OpenCL by enabling modern application to tap into the computing power of graphics processors, boosting performance and freeing up a computer’s main processor for other tasks. In addition, the OpenGL 4 standard includes support for hardware-accelerated geometry tessellation (essentially, simplifying shapes), can render content and apply shaders with 64-bit accuracy, and sports improved shaders for better rendering quality and antialiasing capability.

“The release of OpenGL 4.0 is a major step forward in bringing state-of-the-art functionality to cross-platform graphics acceleration, and strengthens OpenGL’s leadership position as the epicenter of 3D graphics on the web, on mobile devices as well as on the desktop,” said OpenGL ARB working group chair (and Nvidia’s Core openGL senior manager) Barthold Lichtenbelt, in a statement.

Not all existing hardware will be able to handle OpenGL 4 capabilities; in the meantime, Khronos has released an OpenGL 3.3 specification to bring as much OpenGL 4 functionality to existing GPU hardware as possible. Nvidia says its forthcoming Fermi-based graphics systems will fully support OpenGL 4.0.

Games News FIFA outselling PES by 4-to-1
Posted by maximus on Tuesday, November 10 @ 11:22:30 GMT (373 reads)

Electronic Arts' John Schappert has said that FIFA 10 is outselling rival Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 by 4-to-1.

Speaking during a conference call to investors last night, the EA executive team also confidently predicted that its Battlefield franchise can take on Activision's Call of Duty, and that UK studio Criterion is currently developing a new Need for Speed title for 2010.

Comparing sales of its market-leading football franchise, Schappert said that "the sell through at retail in Europe is 31 per cent ahead of last year’s FIFA 09 on a comparable period basis and we are outselling Pro Evolution Soccer 4 to 1."

EA Games label president Frank Gibeau said that the publisher was successfully revitalising its blockbusters, pointing to 2.5 million sales of the recently-released Need for Speed: Shift as evidence of improved quality.

Games News Modern Warfare 2 to be
Posted by maximus on Sunday, June 21 @ 11:59:14 BST (381 reads)

Activision Blizzard has briefed its advertising agency TBWA to make the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 the "biggest entertainment launch of all time".

The publisher wants the Infinity Ward-developed title to eclipse previous records set by games such as Grand Theft Auto IV, which sold 3.6 million units on its first day with a retail value of USD 310 million.

"We believe the idea that TBWA presented to us delivers on that goal," said Brad Jakeman, chief creative officer of Activision, speaking to Ad Age.

"What we liked most about the TBWA campaign is that it's an idea that's big enough to be articulated in lots of different kind of media. That is always the acid test for a great idea."

While the campaign is currently under wraps, it's expected to incorporate TV, print, outdoor, social and online media.

Games News Take-Two frustrated by second hand sales
Posted by maximus on Thursday, January 29 @ 17:55:18 GMT (365 reads)

Take-Two has said that it is frustrated by the sale of second hand product through specialist chains such as GameStop.

The company is increasingly looking to online solutions to combat the loss of sales due to pre-owned goods, with the forthcoming release of Grand Theft Auto: The Lost and the Damned an example of breathing life back into an older game.

"GameStop continues to aggressively push their used game business, which is having a meaningful negative impact on sales of new games," noted analyst Doug Creutz, following a meeting with Take-Two CEO Ben Feder this week.

A new UK based producer of addons for Microsoft’s Flight Simulator X has launched the first of a range of WWII aircraft to flight simmers through their website. Development of the FSX Hellcat has been ongoing by Project Manager Dean Greasley who launched Real Flight in June 2008, and his small team to complete.

Attention to detail has been the key to already gaining positive feedback from forums across the flight sim community. Built only for FSX including SP1, SP2 and Acceleration (no planned version for FS9), the Hellcat has a highly detailed virtual cockpit complete with 3d gauges and authentic textures, as well as switches to arm and use both bombs and rockets, as well as the working drop tank.

Estimates point to CD sales falling by around 19 per cent in the third quarter of 2008 in North America, with continued threats from peer-to-peer networks, but according to NPD music-based videogames have now become "important" to the music industry.

"Year-to-date through November, the music and dance genre was the best-selling genre in video games, representing 16 percent of total software sales for the year," said the company's videogames analyst Anita Frazier.

"But we think in three to four years' time, although there are good reasons why it should be 2010 already...but we'll see."

Games News Funcom apologises for Age of Conan breast reduction
Posted by maximus on Wednesday, June 04 @ 09:21:36 BST (532 reads)

A recent patch to Funcom's Age of Conan game resulted in the involuntary reduction in size of character model assets - specifically, the breast size of female characters.

Funcom has responded to complaints from forum users.

"Funcom can confirm that some of the female models in the game have had the size of their breasts changed. This is due to an unintended change in data that was introduced in an earlier patch - data which controls the so-called morph values associated with character models and the size of their respective body parts," the company said in a statement.

"We are working on a fix for this and your breasts should be back to normal soon."
